An evaluation of changes in stock productivity and consequences for management. An example based on North Atlantic albacore Thunnus alalunga ArchiMer
Kell, Laurence T; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Reference points are important elements of fisheries management and the supporting scientific advisory frameworks. However, fish stocks can fluctuate extensively over a large range of spatial and temporal scales independent of human exploitation and there has been a classical tendency to assume a dichotomy, i.e., that changes in fish populations are primarily attributable either to exploitation or to environmental variability. Therefore we look at variability in surplus production and examine the relative impacts of the environment and exploitation on the productivity of North Atlantic albacore (Thunnus alalunga). The analysis revealed that variations were driven by environmental effects. It was also found that substantial variations in time-series of...

Analysis of tagging data from North Atlantic Albacore (Thunnus Alalunga): Attrition Rate Estimates ArchiMer
Ortiz De Zarate, Victoria; Bertignac, Michel.
In this study, an attempt is made to estimate natural mortality rate for North Atlantic albacore. We implement a spatially aggregated tag-attrition model to analyse the results of an albacore tagging experiment conducted in the Bay of Biscay from 1988 to 1991. The model predicts probabilities of the possible fates of tagged fish and the tags that they carry. The model includes several parameters consisting of catchabilities by fleets involved in recaptures and a combination of natural mortality plus emigration from the study area. Model fitting is carried out by finding the maximum of a multinomial likelihood function. Effect of reporting rate values on the estimations are evaluated and several hypothesis on the pre-mixing period of the tagged fish...

Approche de l'impact écologique de la pêcherie thonière au filet maillant dérivant en Atlantique nord-est ArchiMer
Goujon, Michel; Antoine, Loic; Collet, Anne; Fifas, Spyros.
This document presents the results of a study on the impact of the french albacore tuna drift net fishery, mainly at the dolphins population level. Data collected during two embarked observers campains in 1992 and 1993 and the results of a sighting survey in 1993 give an estimation of the population size of common and striped dolphins (61 888 and 73 843) and mean values of ratio fishing of mortality (0.7 and 1.6%). A model was built in order to simulate the effect of the 5% upper limits of fishing mortality (1.5 and 3%). These values would leed to an annual rate of decrease of -1 %. It is unlikely that such values would jeopardize the survival and the presence of these species. Total incidental catches represent 15% of these total catch; albacore tuna...

By-catch and Discarding in Pelagic Trawl Fisheries ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Tregenza, N; Heessen, H; Beerow, S; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Incidental mammal catch and the composition of the fish catch were studied in pelagic trawl fisheries in the North-East Atlantic. Several seasonal European fisheries were investigated with scientific observation on the fishing vessels. A total of 379 days at sea were observed . The sampled fisheries were horsemackerel (Dutch, French), herring (Irish), mackerel (UK), pilchard (UK , French) and other French fisheries (hake, tuna, bass, black bream, anchovy). Unintentional catches of dolphins were recorded in four of the investigated fisheries (Dutch horsemackerel, French tuna, French hake and French sea bass) at a rate of 1 dolphin per 100 tow hours; Grey seals were caught in the Irish herring fishery at a rate of 4 individuals per 100 tow hours. The fish...

Characterization and standardization of the Atlantic albacore French pelagic trawl fishery ArchiMer
Nikolic, Natacha; Lauretta, Matthew; Patucca, Audrey; Morandeau, Gilles.
We compiled and analysed logbook data from the French trawl albacore fishery covering the period 1991–2015. The dataset comprised catch and effort data for the French fleet operating in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea, as well as spatiotemporal and gear characteristics. Generalized linear modelling was used to model spatial, seasonal, environmental, and gear covariates of fleet CPUE rates. A long-term index of relative abundance is provided that can be integrated into the stock assessment of North Atlantic albacore. The analysis revealed higher albacore CPUE associated with relatively low sea surface temperature and distinct seasonal effects. The derived abundance trend for the French trawl fishery agreed with the estimated time series of stock abundance...

Differentiation of albacore stock: review by oceanic regions ArchiMer
Nikolic, Natacha; Bourjea, Jerome.
Because one of the most common problems in fisheries is the definition of management units, we propose in this paper a bibliometric review focusing on the differentiation of Albacore populations, Thunnus alalunga, among and within oceanic regions (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Mediterranean Sea). This paper is the first step of a current work on a global review of Albacore tuna using an international aquatic database (ASFA). For the present purpose, 367 publications, mainly composed of articles (64%), but also conference papers, proceedings and reports (24%), and books (12%), were analyzed. We will see that the concept of the stock and its delimitation is controversial because of the divergence of results. Such a conclusion makes us believe in...

Essais de pêche du germon au chalut-boeuf pélagique du 31 août au 14 septembre 87 ArchiMer
George, Jean-paul.
Trials of albacore tuna fishing using pelagic pair trawling took place in the month of September 1987 with trawlers of the Lorient-Etel region. The good results obtained should make possible a renaissance of the French tuna fleet, on the decline for several years now.

Is the recruitment a key biological process in the hypothetical NAO-Atlantic tunas relationships? ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc.
In the recent past, it has been put forward that recruitment of the North Atlantic albacore, East Atlantic bluefin tuna and North Atlantic swordfish could be related to the North AtlanticOscillation (NAO). In this document, the biological processes behind the NAO/recruitmentrelationship are further investigated. Then, the possible relationship between the East Atlanticbluefin tuna recruitment was re-investigated. The linear relationship appeared to be only due to the low frequency signal, both BFT recruitment and NAO displaying a pseudo-cyclic upwardtrend, but year-to-year fluctuations were not synchronous. The superposed epoch analysis, thatwas conducted to test for possible non-linear and non-monotonous relationship did not reveal any clear connection....

Projet GERMON. Structure génétique et migration du thon Germon ArchiMer
Nikolic, Natacha; Puech, Alexis; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Munschy, Catherine; Bodin, Nathalie; Brach-papa, Christophe; Potier, Michel; West, Wendy; Knoery, Joel; Zudaire, Iker; Dhurmeea, Zahirah; Degroote, Maxime; Cedras, Maria; Evano, Hugues; Bourjea, Jerome.
The GERMON project had several aims i) to understand the populations’ structure between albacore tuna southwest of the Indian Ocean and southeast Atlantic, ii) to determine the origin of juveniles observed in South Africa iii) to improve the understanding of the biology field (Size/Size and Size/Weight; reproduction and feeding area; trophic linkages) and iv) to initiate work on chemical analyzes and adaptation of the albacore species to its environment. These aims have been held and the results allow a better understanding of the management albacore. A general summary of results is presented in Part 9.
